OUR AIM

From lived experience, we get how tough it can be to grow up away from ‘home’ and the challenges this can add to those you already face as you grow up. Sometimes it can be hard to know whether your experiences of the care system are unique or universal; what we want is to create a space where people feel free to be open about their experience and find other young people they can relate to. Sometimes being looked after by the local authority can be an isolating, confusing, and traumatic experience, and what we hope to do is provide resources and tools that can help other Young people that are either in, or have been in, the care system navigate their way through this period of their life.

Our Aim: About

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

What is the story behind the name ‘Not Your Average Care Kids’?

We feel that there is still a stigma, and negative connotations, attached to being in care or being a care leaver. It’s as if people expect us to be a certain way or do certain things. Sometimes, their surprise when we exceed expectations they hold of us is just as hurtful and damaging as the lack of belief people can have in us. We know that no two people with experience of the care system are the same; after all, we all have different lived experiences. Our name is a push back at the negative stereotypes and stigma we feel there still is attached to care experienced young people.
